Kampong Glam has become a hip and happening food destination with the likes of Maison Ikkoku, Blu Jaz and now this only-five-months-old-yet-already-a-trendy-spot newbie Symmetry.
Hidden in a serene corner of Jalan Kubor (next to Santa Grand Hotel, not along the rows of tombstones on the other side), Symmetry draws inspiration from Australian casual dining culture and sophisticated French cuisine. It is a laid-back café by day serving casual brunch and lunch items such as Croque Monsieur and Eggs Benedict, but a restaurant bar by night, serving more sophisticated and composed plates.
The minute you walk in, you are welcomed by a retro yet beautiful interior that signals a sort of brilliance and confidence – the feeling that makes you hope that the food lives up to your expectations. It has an artfully sanded down brick wall, long windows, and a bar counter with distressed metal elements. The restaurant seats about only 20 – 25 people, so reservation is a definite for brunch.
Crab ($8): Kohlrabi, apples, frisee, sorrel, nuts.
Mozzarella Beignet ($14): Basil aioli. Cheesy goodness.
Eggs Florentine ($18): Poached eggs, aged cheddar, creamed baby spinach, mornay sauce. These guys nailed their eggs 🙂
Arrabiata ($20): Fusili, chillies, roma tomatoes, olives, crispy whitebait. As simple as it sounds, Symmetry elevates this classic Italian dish with the addition arugula and crispy whitebait. It is these simple details that distinguishes the chic and the boring ones.
Brioche Pain Perdue ($15): Cinnamon infused apple compote, nuts, rum & raisin milk custard. This was something different. It’s meant to be french toast but it doesn’t taste like your typical french toast. Maybe because I personally prefer my french toasts thicker and sweeter. accompanied with either ice cream or maple syrup. Nonetheless, the milk custard was a refreshing spin, though the rum and raisin flavour was mild and almost indistinctable.
Service was impeccable, attentive and knowledgeable. However, I felt that prices were a little on the high side. Idk, but still not shaking this off my list anytime soon 🙂
