Au Chocolat

Admist all the celebrity restaurants in Asia’s premier shopping destination, The Shoppes at Marina Bay, there is a French inspired Bistro and retail ConfiserieAu Chocolat. But what makes it so different from your typical French bistros or Artisanal chocolate confectionary is that it is made-in-Singapore, and also its emphasis on chocolate is worked into the entire menu, even the savory dishes. For example, there is the Au Chocolat Benedict ($18) that comes with hollandaise sauce infused with red wine & dark chocolate, and the Duck Confit ($27) topped off with a tangy chocolate orange sauce.
Au Chocolat is a chocolate and candy wonderland, or even almost like Willy Wonka’s Chocolat Factory you may say. At its Confiserie, not only will you find goodies catered to every taste bud, but also a master chocolatier at work in the chocolate atelier, creating delectable works of art on site. And at its Patisserie, you can expect to find luxurious handmade chocolates and candies, and luscious homemade cakes, pies and pastries all made fresh daily.
Its décor is whimsical, rustic and definitely Parisian-café-inspired. Its prominent façade of French fixtures, and peaceful yet chic ambience reflect the antiquated streets of Paris. To add on to this sense of nostalgia, staffs also wear straw hats, and black and white striped aprons that blend in with the old elegant feel of the place. We were also extremely captivated with its one-of-a-kind elements such as a molten chocolate roof, and a fascinating miniature vintage train set running across the ceiling!
Au Chocolat has an extensive menu that caters to the preference of all palates. They offer a wide selection of all-day breakfast menu, salads, pastas, meats, sweet and savoury crepes, finger foods, and also an impressive list of beverages and desserts. During their Happy Hours 3pm – 8pm everyday, you can expect to savour 1 free finger food for every 3 finger food ordered, and also 1-for-1 Beer! Especially worth it I would say.
Our visit to Au Chocolat that day was specifically for their decadent wide array of desserts. Indeed, we had a hard time selecting our choices as there was just to many that we wanted to try! But we chose 3 anyway, before quickly consoling ourselves that we’ll be back very soon.

Frozen Hot Chocolate

Au Chocolate Frozen Hot Chocolate ($12): Frozen Hot – It’s an oxymoron! But what it is basically is your typical Hot Chocolate, blended with ice. It’s basically a Chocolate Ice Blend I would say. It was nevertheless a satisfying chocolaty goodness. Nothing’s better than pure chocolate! But this drink was good for the 3 of us. I wouldn’t recommend you to devour in this all by yourself, though it is not entirely a bad idea …

Apple Pie Cheesecake

There were as many as 5 different cheesecake flavours – Original, Red Velvet, Chocolate, Carrot Cake, Caramel Swirl, Apple Pie … (and a few more which I can’t remember). We had the Apple Pie Cheesecake ($8). It was a good cheesecake. But what we especially loved about it was that there was a good amount of crumble on top of the cheesecake, which provided that extra crunch different from the everyday cheesecakes. Also, the apple slices were slightly caramelized and had a nice bite to them. But I would definitely appreciate if there were more apples mixed in evenly throughout the cheesecake, rather than just the front and bottom portion of the cheesecake.

Cookies & Cream Brownie

Like the cheesecake, there were many different varieties of Brownies. We settled for the not-so-classic Cookies & Cream Brownie ($8). Think a fudgey gooey dense piece of brownie with pieces of white chocolate pieces, slathered with a cream cheese frosting with oreo cookies. It was RICH, and delicious no doubt, but slightly too sweet for my liking! I was good with 5 bites, and my other friend happily took this opportunity to finish the rest of the brownie (She loved it the most of all the desserts we had). I would have definitely preferred a normal piece of Brownie.
It was definitely enough sugar for the day. But given that it has a decent savoury menu and Happy Hour promotions, we have decided that it would be just next week after I return from my trip that we pay Au Chocolate our second visit! 🙂 Service was also extremely commendable. Each and every staff was cheerful and welcoming. Our server was also extremely knowledgeable, thorough and patient with her description and recommendations of the desserts. Top-notched service!
If you’re looking for a place that will please all sorts of people, young and old, here’s just the best place to go! Plus why not go back in time when we were once all kids and just enjoy all the chocolates in the world.
